Hand Drawn Draft (Double Page Spread)
At the far left of the page, there will be the magazines logo (Heart Monitor effect) but also the words 'Xclusive Interview', this will bring more attention to the magazines article.
At the far right of the page will be a angled image of the artist to add extra effect and make the article more personal as there is more information for the reader.
The main image again will carry on the theme of female domination in the music industry. The image will be the female artist foot on the chest of the male model, whilst she is pulling his tie. This creates a good representation of female power and confidence. Where on the other hand male audience may find the image slightly sexual, because of the power of the female role. The words for the article will be fit into the blank section and will be arched across over and around the main image
Hand Drawn Draft (Contents)
For the contents, I will carry the aspect of energy and electricity through onto the contents page. However this time the style of electricity would make up the layout of the page. At the top of the contents, would be the magazine name mixed with the logo. On the right hand side would be the title 'This Week' this instantly allows the reader to know they are on the contents page. The page is then split in five section; The first is far left and this is simply a rectangular box stretching from top to bottom of the page and will have a heart monitor effect in it. This has been place there to amplify the effect of the music genre, within the magazine.
The second and fourth sections will include images of the feature artist, and this will come under the section called 'The Buzz', this is the information section, giving previews of articles featured in the issue. However the word 'buzz' is again a play on the use of energy and electricity.
The third section will a letter from the editor of the magazine, this will explain the main article (the artist) but also mention other things within the magazine. The effect of having a letter from the editor within the magazine, gives a more personal feel to the reader, when they are reading the magazine.
The fifth and final section, is a basic set of listings within the magazine, these give the reference to the articles and corresponding pages. These are featured in every magazine. I also considered putting in a subscription box, this would show more detail towards the institution of the magazine.
Hand Drawn Draft (Front Cover)
I tired to make my front cover appealing, by making it seem like it was full of energy. I will do this with the use of the magazine name 'Pulse' begin made to look like a lighting flash, giving the representation of a fast, quick and alive genre of music. On the other hand the logo of the magazine (which will be throughout the magazine) is a simple coloured block with the effects of a heart monitor going through it. This represents the heart beat of the target audience, it shows that is their hearts are beating quite fast, again showing the speed of the music, however also showing their love for the music. The main image will be on the left hand side of the page, however to add impact is may be changed to feature across the page. The image will show the male model looking away, contrasting to the female model looking directly at the camera. This again show her confidence, on the other hand with the male model looking away from the camera it also enhances the effect of dominance. Both models will be dress very formal and in the same colour, to show that they are connected but, disengaged at the same time (with the aspect of dominance).
The cover line are in the same text as the mast head, however will have slight differences to add an aspect of energy again to the magazine. On the other hand the main cover line, will be stretched across the page giving the impression it is the main focus of the magazine. I decided that background would be a dark colour, such as purple or blue, however it may not contrast well with the use of black on my models. On the other hand it may work better as my cover lines and main cover line (showing the new artist) will be bright vibrant colours. I will try to recreate the feel of a nightclub, with the use of colour on the front. I will do this with the use of a dark background and light colours. The price of my magazine is at the bottom along with date of issue.

Planning and Research part 3 (Target Audience)
Once I had began to put my ideas together I had to look at my target audience with more detail. The genre of electro-pop seemed to reach out more to the younger generation rather then anybody else, this meant that my magazine would have to be create to appeal to a younger audience. Therefore one could feature things such as electro fashion or merchandise of artists (as shown above a 'La Roux' T-shirt) . On the other hand, I could feature things that would be able to sell the electro-pop life style to the target audience. On the other hand with the genre of electro-pop been mostly enjoyed by the younger section of society, such as students, this would mean the magazine price would have to be looked at carefully. If only a small amount of people enjoy the genre of music then to make a profit the magazines price would have to be higher then normal mainstream music magazines, however if the magazine is aimed at a younger audience, this maybe seen as negative as most of the young population is made up of students, therefore the price would have to be affordable to students who are at the far end of education or have just come out of education, i.e first job. This would mean they can afford the magazine but at the same time fall into the target audience, of a younger reader. Whilst at the same time applying and representing the same ideas and values of the audience back to themselves through the magazine.
Planning and Research part 2
Once I decided on a genre, I then had to research that genre. I decided to create a magazine for the music genre of electro-pop. Electro music is created using synthesisers, therefore I could look at the aspects of creation of the music for my cover, on the other hand the music mainly is quite fast paced, but also into the dance genre, so I could feature a cover full of energy and vibrant colours. When looking at the artist who fall into the electro-pop genre, they all seemed to have a quite similar style such as La Roux, Lady Gaga and Little boots (as pictured above). This style comes not only from the artists own personal image, but lifestyle and their sound. There fore I could use this aspect to create and outrageous artist with the same sort of image, however I could also add a slight twist to make it more individual. Furthermore adding a different aspect to the electro-pop genre I would be able to have a mixed target audience.
Planning and Research part 1
Whilst carrying out the magazine analysis , on the covers, contents and double page spread. I decided I would concentrate on one particular genre of music. I looked at the more popular genres of the mainstream music industry at the moment. I also looked at the more popular mainstream artists, such as Lady Gaga (featured above), Rhianna, and so on. Whilst carrying out my research on the artists, I then decided that I would focus on the genre of electro-pop, this type of music seemed to but up beat and fast paced, therefore my magazine would need to be bright and vibrant. The type of artists who are involved in this scene of the music industry seem to have an outrageous attitude and style to bring to the world of music, such as Lady Gaga. Furthermore my magazine would have to feature a represention which would stress the effect of a outrageous theme, this could be a wide range of topics, such as dominance to sexuality. Also my models would have to be made to seem, different and be able to stand out of the crowd whilst at the same time reaching the target audience. I also would have to create something which expressed the ideas and values of my target audience.
Double Page Spread Analysis 3
The Main image on the double page spread is a image of the Black Eyed Peas, however because the article is about Will.I.AM the rest of the group seem to fade into the background. Instantly the reader is then able to work out what the article maybe about. In this case it seems to be about the artist leaving the group. It may also suggest this as in the image he seems to be not only more dominate to the others but, he seems to be stood slightly further out, from the groupFurthermore the main title suggests the same thing; 'WILL HE, WON'T HE?', the image has been created to compliment the title and the overall article. Again the main focus is placed on Will.I.AM. If we look at the way in which the page is laid out the main image is on the left hand side of the page, however it seems to spread slightly on the right hand side of the page. The text on the other hand is more on the right hand side of the page, although there seems to be a main focus paragraph, this is the one with the black background, and the white text. This maybe due to the factor of the more important information is placed in the paragraph.
Double Page Spread Analysis 2
The headline 'Danger! Shakira At Work' also adds to image of an independent woman. On the other hand when we look at the text it seems to have a plain essence about it a making it seem normal for a woman, been independent. This would appeal to a female audience, however, Shakira has a sexual appeal for men, the fact she is independent would also add to this kind off appeal for men. The text has been put on a white background to make it stand out much more.

Double Page Spread Analysis 1
The double page spread, has all the basic , conventions of a magazine, it features a main head line which is eye catching whilst informant at the same time. It has been made to look as though each letter has been cut out of a news paper, also the way the font comes across seems to make it have a attitude type affect towards the audience. These factors combined make it eye catching but also give it attitude making it edgy. The main image is of artist Lilly Allen. We get the image of her having positive attitude, this works well in sync with the text and helps to create a powerful perception of Lilly Allen, whilst at the same time helping to give her a positive image with the help of the article. If we look at the costume of the image, we see she is wear a read t-shirt, this may influence the reader to see her a having attitude in the same way the text and her posture do.
The use of a white background help to make the image stand out, and also have a good effect in making the main text stand out on the page. The layout of the article, is basic but affective, we know this as there is a main image on the right hand side of the page, bu the layout of the text and the main headline are also basically placed for the reader to understand the layout easily.

Contents Analysis 3 (NME Magazine)
The contents page features again the basics of a magazine contents has such as a mast head, again showing the logo of the magazine and the title "THIS WEEK". The colours are the magazines logo red, also there is black to give the magazine and eye-catching impact effect on the reader. On the left hand side of the page there is a 'Band Index' this allow the reader to see the new and upcoming band in the next few issues. If we look at the colour surrounding the text, we can see that it is a vibrant red, this may suggest the 'freshness' and 'hotness' of the new bands. The colour also matches the logo, which may also signify the 'hotness' of the magazine. However it may also symbolise the power of the magazine.
The sub-titles for each section of the contents are in contrasting colours, black and white this in turn helps them stand out more to the reader. Like the rest of the text on the page. Under each sub-heading we can see that the different features of the magazine have been put in order of the types of things in each category.
The main image is a image of the featured artist in the magazine in this case its Oasis. The image shows two of the band members on their world tour, this makes the image more personal to the reader as they are interested in the tour and it becomes a way for them to see the tour. The title of the image '...Oasis kicked off their world tour' has been made to stand out and grab the readers attention, its in a bold, black font. This is then followed by smaller but still bold font giving the reader a little more information on the article. Above the main title there is silver italic font saying 'The moment that.....' again dragging the reader in, however this font seems a little more suttle as it is silver and smaller the the text below, this maybe because it is leading up to the main title. With the article we can see the magazines ideology, this is show via the genre of music the band fall into and the type of people who listen to this type of music.
Below the main text there is a advertisement for people to subscribe to the magazine, this is in a black box which again stands out loudly, with it being on a white background. This is also accomplished with the aid of yellow text and the image on the magazines. This also shows an example of the magazines intuitions as its advertising itself.

Contents Analysis 2 (Q Magazine)
The contents, again features all of the basic, such as a mast head of the magazine (Q magazine), This much like the splash, allows us to identify the intuition of the magazine. In this case Q magazine. At the left hand-side of the magazine, there is a index of what the magazine contains. The colour are quite bold e.g, red black and white. The also are colours which quite commonly go together. The red heading stands out and gives the impression (much like the contents of NME) of been new and up to date, i.e been red hot information given straight to the readers. Below the index there is text box giving the reader information on a special feature within the magazine, the colours of black and silver give us the impression of the article been special and important. We also can see a date in the far right side of the magazine on the masthead.
The are two images on the contents page, the first of which is a image of the featured band in the magazine (The Courteeners). The image is placed directly in the centre of the magazine and shows all the band members is an dominant position as the camera is looking up at them. The text box in he lower left corner of the image, gives the reader more information on the band and shows us the page number of the article. Again the main colour if the text is black, which allows it to stand out to the reader. The second image is another artist, however instead of being a article its a small review at the bottom of the page. Here that artist is seen as laid back as he is using the pedestal to support himself, this also makes him seen more relaxed. The text is again black which works well with the grey colour of the text box.
At the far bottom of the left side of the page there is a small text box, showing the different aspects of how the reader can get in touch with the magazine, such as; e-mail, letter and subscription. This again shows the institution of the magazine. Within this section we also get a list of things which are always in the magazine such as crosswords and competitions.

Contents Analysis 1 (NME Magazine)
The contents is used to show the reader the contents of the magazine, things such as, interviews, reviews and articles. The listings in a contents are usually numbered. Or have headings such as the one pictured. The contents features a mast head, allowing the reader to see what is in the issue if the magazine. The colours chosen are the magazines logo colour and also white which can be seen to stand out on a black background.
The main image is of the main article of the magazine, and has a large article title which stands out so the reader can go directly to it. The photo itself stands out from the rest of the page, one reason is because its one of the only photos on the page.
The subheadings for each topic also stand out as they are black boxes with white wording, on the other hand the layout of the boxes makes them stand out more as they are all in a vertical line down the right hand side of the page. The numbers of the pages are also quite bright meaning the stand out (as they are in a red font), at the bottom of the article there is a red arrow, this gives us the image of fresh new gigs and acts to be featured in the near future. Next to the arrow we also have a subscription alert, this is presented using the effect of bright colours on a dark background, again giving the impact of standing out. On the other hand the use of the magazine images in the section also help to draw attention to this section.
On the far left had of the contents there, is a list of band featured in the magazines, this allows the reader to instantly turn to the page with the band/artists of there choice, this would also feature more information of the band for the reader to look at. The band index stands out quite well, as it in red font. This symbolises the new type of acts that are featured within the magazine, it also shows the type of feel the audience has towards the band, an example of this might be the 'Hotness' of the band.

Magazine Cover Analysis (Rolling Stone Magazine)
The Cover again has all the typical conventions of a magazine such as; Mast head, Cover line and so on. We can also see again that the mast head is covered from the audience again allowing us to know it is a well know institution. Giving us the impression of the popularity of the magazine. However this also lets us know that the institution probably have more consumer items, such as a website for there audience to enhance their experience. The main image of the magazine (Lady Gaga) is in the centre of the magazine making the model look dominate to the audience, but also giving a sexual image of the artist. This appeals to the audience, which in this case maybe mostly male, because of the genre of the magazine.
The magazine is covered, in cover lines giving the impression of the magazine been full of information. The magazine itself is a more rock and roll type magazine, again showing us the type of audience of which the magazine would be aimed at. However has crossed genres by having a dance/electro artist on the font cover and featuring an article about her within. The cover lines on the magazine stand out quite well as the background is pink and they are white, giving a powerful effect on the front cover. On the other hand the size of the fonts and fonts type varies on the magazine, from large to small. The image of Lady Gaga gives us a look at her along with the main cover line we can tell that the article will be about her and her rise to fame. The date and price differ on this cover rather then the others, they are above the masthead instead of been in the far right hand of the splash. This shows the main focus of the magazine is the detail within it and not the price, on the other hand this may also suggest that the institution of the magazine is well know to there audience whom may distinctively know the price of the magazine when they buy it. The pink colouring of the magazine suggests, a bubbly and fun type of artist of the cove of that magazine and gives us a representation of how people expect Lady Gaga to act.

Music Magazine Cover analaysis (NME)
The magazine has all the basic conventions such as, a masthead which identifies the theme of the issue, we also have a the main logo of the magazine (in this case NME). The main logo also lets us identify the institution if the magazine. As we know NME is popular we will also find that they have a TV channel and a website to boost their popularity. Again identifying the institution of the magazine and its media products. The main image of the magazine is a image of an artist (La Roux). This is trying to drag the audience in to reading the magazine. The model has been made to look like she is looking directly as us, the audience, giving us a sense of curiosity.
The magazine features cover lines, again trying to drag us into reading the magazine. These cover lines are written in bright, vibrant colours to make them more appealing. We can also see a bar code and a date issue. The main cover line informs us further of the issue.
The audience of this magazine are the consumers, these people need to be identified as a target audience. A magazine can do this by looking at the audiences ideology and their culture and genre of music they enjoy. By doing this the magazine will be successful. In the case of NME, they mainly focus on more indie type music, which is appealing to many people.
The representation of the magazine, means we get our views and ideas (Cultural) given back to us. Is shown through the use of the main image and cover lines, the main image (La Roux) represents the type of artist the target audience like to listen to, we know this as the artist has had a number one, therefore its a positive hing having her on the cover. On the hand the coverlines, 'The Future 50' allows use to find out about up and coming artists, of the music genre the audience enjoy. The magazine also features a barcode and date of issue which is a basic feature of a magazine.

Music Magazine Cover analysis (Q Magazine)
The magazine cover has the basics, A mast head to show the name of the magazine however as Q magazine is a well know magazine, the mast head doesn't need to be fully displayed therefore a section is covered by the model (Madonna). Here we get a sense of the magazines institution (Q magazine), which again is a very well know magazine and people instinctively know what it is. It also features cover lines, these are used to attract the reading in the magazine, however with out drawing to much attention from the main image. On the other hand it also features a main cover line, this is mainly along the bottom section of the magazine and covers most of the area, the font is different for each layer and word of the main cover line. The main font (Artists name) is bright and bold the same colour as the magazines logo. On the other hand the it also stands out as it is on a black background.
The main image is a image of the singer Madonna, the image is quite big. Therefore making it appealing to the audience as it stands out boldly. She is looking directly at the reader again appealing more to the reader and dragging them into the magazine. With the image we get a sense of confidence and power from the way she looking directly at the audience.
The selling line on the magazine again is slightly covered up by the main model, also again due to the popularity of the magazine people know what the magazine is about. The selling line on the other hand allows the audience to pick up on the genre of magazine, and go straight to the main marketing point of the magazine. "Britain's Biggest Music Magazine".
The magazine also features a bar code, with has the price and when the issue goes out (date and year). We also get a model credit, said by the model. Here we get Madonna saying "Stupid Question ! Next!" making it seem like the model in being personal towards the magazine.
The Ideology of the magazine is the culture of a variety of music genres, it doesn't look at one genre but focuses on many. We can see this with the selling line "Britain's Biggest Music Magazine" we can see that the address music as a whole again making it seem like the look at many different styles of music. When we look closer at the ideology of the magazine it becomes easier to identify the audience, in the case of Q magazine they would reach a wide range of music fans, because of the different genres it features.
L.I.I.A.R (Music Magazine)
- Language- The terminology we use for our product, an example of this could be the media terms for our magazine like mast head, cover line and sell line.
- Institution- An organization, such as a media company like the BBC. A example of magazine institution would be a well kown magazine like Q or NME.
- Ideology- This is the ideas, values and morals of our target audience. In other words reflecting their ideas and views through our product.
- Audience- These are the consumers of media, this means its in the producers interest to appeal to them. For our magazines we must decide on a genre to appeal to our audience.
- Representation-Representing society back to the audience through our produce.

Evaluation
The brief was to create a front cover and a mock contents page for a new college magazine, using Photoshop and Publisher. The front cover had to feature a image of student, The photo itself had to be a medium close up photo (just above the shoulders). All our work then had to be published on Blogger.com. We had to create hand drawn drafts and IT drafts for our assignment. When creating the magazine I had to take into account L.I.I.A.R. (Language, Institution, Ideology, Audience and Representation.)
The first task I set myself was to do research on college magazines and begin an analysis of the covers. Online I found two magazine covers on featuring a student and the other featuring a elderly man (possibly a member of staff). Whilst looking at the covers, I realised that the cover was aimed at a audience of students. The Mast head was appealing as well as the cover lines, I had to apply this when designing my cover. When looking closer at the magazines I looked at the features of a magazine and looked at what goes on to the cover of a college magazine. As the magazine was aimed at a college I realised there was no use for a bar code or a selling line, because the magazine would have been free to distribute around the college. On the other hand I decided that it would be a better idea to have a student on the front cover rather then a member of staff, like the covers I was looking at. This would appeal more to the college which is mainly students.
My initial idea was to have My model stood on the balcony in the ash building therefore giving the image the college is modern and sophisticated. However my plans changed when I had the idea of putting my model at the bottom of some stairs, the ideology behind this is, the magazine is called aim (Aim Higher) therefore having a student at the bottom of satires symbolises there climb and effort to achieve what they want to achieve. This was a big change to my beginning plan, However it seemed to work quite well. When taking the photo I decided that I would have my model in the lower right corner of the cover, therefore allowing more room for cover lines and also allowed the mast head and subtitle to stand out more. When I had been looking at magazine covers they all used quite unique designs for there font. This made me decided to design my colours and fonts around the time of which the magazine would have gone out. Therefore the colours I used were; Orange, Yellow, Brown and Black. This gave the feel of Autumn to the magazine again this worked well as the magazine would have been released in Autumn. I also chose quite classy and sophisticated fonts to the cover. I had my model hold a green folder the colour, I used green to give the college a fresh and chilled look. I also applied the colleges name and logo at either end of the sub-title giving the reader a sense of been part of a group.
For the wording of my cover I decided that my target was the students, so to try and appeal to them I keep referring to them an example of this is my sub-title, ‘The Mag Made For Students, By Students’. This gave the audience the impression that the magazine has everything they want to read about. The cover also featured cover lines which implied things that would interested students, such as revision tips. However I also thought about what to put word wise on the cover, because it was Autumn some people have exams in January therefore by giving revision tips now students may be more interested.
For the contents I carried on the theme of Autumn and had the title and text in a brown shade. I also had the colleges logo as the bullet points. To try and appeal to the audience more I would have had photos of college events in the left hand margin. The top part of the contents would have articles/feature which would appeal to students more and the lower half would have all articles/features in numeric order.
The magazine cover looks realistic, with the exception of a bar code, left third and selling line. The cover does have some of the conventions of a real magazine, it has things which appeal to its target audience such as, cover lines, sub-title and a masthead. I used Photoshop to allow me to change the scale of my photo and create the over all product, using Photoshop I also changed the contrast of the image and applied the text. Publisher was used to create my basic drafts, by using text boxes and word art, I was able to create mock ups of what the overall magazine would look like.

Final Magazine Cover
The Final Magazine had some changes made to it. The first was the location in which it was shot, I changed from the balcony shot, to a shot near stairs there were two reasons I did this. The first reason was that the shot on the balcony made the magazine seem to bright as I had no control over the lighting within the area. Also the picture was better taken near the stairs. The second reason is to do with the connotation of the image, in the background of the magazine I have a image of stairs, the magazine itself is called AIM, therefore the stairs symbolise the climbing to the top metaphor of the magazine. The text of the of the final product, I decided to stick with the idea of Autumn colours therefore; the mast head, Sub-title and Cover lines are all in browns, oranges and yellows.
The area in which the magazine photo was taken along with the colour of the text add a more sophisticated look to the magazine and add a traditional twist to the front cover.
My model is holding a green folder to give the reader a feel for student life, a fresh image. I also stuck with the idea of the logo at either ends of the masthead and sub-title.
IT Draft (Contents)
The IT draft of my contents page it a replica of my hand drawn plan. The theme of colours has been copied onto the contents page.I decided to change the regular bullet points to the Wyke logo again to distinguish the origin of the magazine but also to give it a modern edge.
I have placed where the photos will be going and also the angle of the photos again to give the magazine a sense of individuality.
Another changed made form the hand drawn plan to the IT draft is the bullet points of the pages, instead of been at different sides they are now just stick a little bit more out of the page.
IT Draft (Front Cover)
The IT draft for my front cover, is quite basic as it shows relatively where every thing would go. Since doing my hand drawn draft I have changed the way in which the cover lines would go, I have moved them from the right side of the page to the left side of the front cover. My model will be placed in the right side of the cover, allowing move room for the rest of the text. The masthead, Sub-title and logos would go in the top on my cover so they stand out more. The cover shows the layout for my magazine, and where everything will go. I created the IT draft on Microsoft Publisher, using text box
es.
Hand Drawn Plan (Contents)
The contents page would feature the title of the magazine, the same colour of the front cove, keeping up the theme of autumn. As would the colour of text in the contents. The contents itself would have a margin on the left hand side which would have photos of college events different for each issue, therefore again getting in touch with the target audience.
The text would feature the more appealing part of the magazine i.e. Revision tips as its nearer to the January exam. These articles are place directly in front of the reader when the magazine is opened. On the other hand the other articles would be put in numerical order on the left hand side of the page at the bottom of the page, much like in a high street magazine, a reader could look at what article or piece they wished by turning to the corresponding page.
Hand Drawn Draft (Front Cover)
For my magazine front cover I was initially going to have a model standing on a balcony in the ASH building, giving the college a sophisticated and modern look. The masthead will be in the central top area of my magazine, making it eye catching. I chose to use colours like orange, yellow and red. I decided on these colours, because of the period of the year the magazine would come out, in this situation autumn time.
The magazine was to have a sub-heading, underneath the mast head saying "The Mag made for students, by students" this slogan would appeal to my target audience of students as they get to decide what is put in the magazine. Also would feature the colleges name and colleges logo to allow people to identity where it originated from.
Along with everything above I also feature cover lines introducing the reader to what is inside the magazine making it seem more appealing and more enticing to read.
Like in the brief my model would be in a medium close-up shot in which I would also add a folder to give a more student orientated look. My model would be smiling to create a positive image of the college its self.

College Magazine Analysis 2
This magazine has a big and bold masthead to grab the readers attention. The advert has a continuous theme of bold bright colours. The advert also uses a array of different font types, therefore making the magazine stand out more. The magazine has a main image of a young woman (student) she is on a white back ground making the model stand out. the magazine also uses model credit e.g. Freshman & Aspiring Actress, this gives use more details of the model/student. We also have a deadline of the issue.
On the issue itself it uses things that would appeal to students such a fashion and health, the magazine seems to be aimed at a more female audience.
The model is wearing fresh, bight and vibrant. Therefore giving a happy and calm image of the college, but also allowing people to believe to that the students and college are a happy and friendly place. The colours also give the reader a happy attitude.
College Magazine Analysis 1
The Magazine has a masthead, this is the name of the magazine, this allows the reader to know what they are reading, also this can be quite eye catching. Wednesday, 30 September 2009
